Hockey WA have been delivering quality, programmed content through the Sporting Schools Government Initiative to increase participation, awareness and social connection to local communities. Through this program, Primary Schools and select ages in Secondary Schools have been further educated and influenced by Hockey.
Hockey WA was able to utilise data collected through this initiative to gain a more informed understanding of hotspot areas for hockey amongst specific age demographics, as well as be more informed on suitable locations for future program offerings.
By populating 2021 and 2022 year data on venues where they have operated the Sporting School initiative, they are able to make use of their member and demand features to pinpoint suitable areas and appropriate messaging to drive participation and awareness of hockey in metro and regional areas.

Through the Market Demand & Gaps module, Hockey WA connected membership and education datasets to identify high-potential participation zones. These insights inform more effective activation and development planning.
Membership mapping by LGA (with darker shading representing higher densities of Hockey WA members) was overlaid with Sporting School locations across 2021 and 2022 (green pins).
This analysis identified potential areas to engage Sporting Schools in regions with lower current member numbers (light blue shading), helping to increase awareness and activate local communities to participate in hockey.
Conversion mapping by LGA (darker shading representing higher conversion rates of potential members) was similarly overlaid with 2021 and 2022 Sporting School locations (green pins).
This revealed clear relationships between areas of strong demand conversion and existing Sporting Schools, providing the ability to track progress over time and assess the value and impact of this initiative in driving participation.
A closer analysis of the Perth CBD and surrounding areas linked Sporting School locations (green pins), Primary School venues (blue dots sized by school rolls), and demand mapping by LGA (darker shading representing higher demand).
These insights, accessed through Hockey WA and ActiveXchange’s platform, helped inform future focus areas for development beyond the Sporting Schools initiative.
Mapping membership demand alongside current and future Sporting School locations enabled Hockey WA to pinpoint where growth opportunities were strongest. This provided a clear view of how new and existing schools could be activated to increase participation and strengthen local hockey communities across WA.
Overlaying member demand with Sporting School and Primary School locations provided Hockey WA with clear evidence to support targeted engagement efforts. These insights highlighted areas where participation potential was high but school activation remained low, helping to prioritise outreach and inform future development planning.
